This is a four string bass guitar with a 'Fender' style bridge, two 'Select' pickups, and a traditional bone nut. With a vintage style adjustable truss rod and a hand carved body and neck, this guitar has excellent sustain and a smooth warm tone.
I used a pull shave to carve the neck, (although now I use a one inch chisel, and a rasp for more precise carving). It has a single tone control and a single volume control. A simple design was used, for a simple but elegant look and feel.
Built with a red oak top, cherry/maple/cherry back, maple/jatoba/maple neck, and a rosewood fretboard, this guitar is an ideal display of the variety of woods that can be used. Although these woods are not tone woods (meaning they have very specific tonal properties), it was made specifically for training myself in working with dense hardwoods.
Carefully constructed to utilize long grain, and avoid short grain, this guitar is very durable. With a very thick shellac finish, it is both tough and very easy to repair. I enhanced the grain with linseed oil before I shellaced it, to give it a smooth, low gloss finish.
